Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien

I love the movies of the ‚Lord of the Rings‘ and though I’ve also tried to read the books, I’ve honestly to say that the books just didn’t work for me like the movies had. I love them, I love the story and the characters and I watch the DVDs almost twice a year, so yes, I consider myself as a fan. And when I was young I also played Lego together with my older brother and so when I found this picture I just had to use it for the BFF. 😉

Ich liebe die Filme von ‚Der Herr der Ringe‘ und obwohl ich auch versucht habe die Bücher zu lesen, muss ich ehrlich zugeben, dass die Bücher für mich nicht funktioniert haben, nicht so wie die Filme. Ich liebe sie, ich liebe die Geschichte und ich liebe die Charaktere und ich schaue die DVDs fast ein-/ zwei Mal im Jahr, daher ja, ich bezeichne mich selbst als Fan. Und als ich noch klein war habe ich auch immer Lego gespielt gemeinsam mit meinem älteren Bruder und als ich dann dieses Bild hier gefunden habe, muss ich es einfach für den BFF verwenden. 😉

I don’t know where I should start and it’s really hard for me to write an appropriate review. I love the films and I’ve seen them already countless times and so often that I’m already able to join in the dialogues. Hence, everybody can probably understand that the book hasn’t offered a lot of attraction or tension for me anymore and that it was a laborious reading. I have already bought the book years ago in English and since then I tried to read it twice and have broken off every time.
And also this time I have quarreled so much with myself, but everybody told to me and said that I just have to come to a certain point and then it’ll become better and more interesting. But unfortunately, this point has never really came for me, that I would say ‘wow, now I must read on because it’s so interesting’ but it was always a compulsion to finally finish this book, which I have already started at the end of December –> probably this says everything. 😦

The writing manner of Tolkien was definitely not what I usually like. For me it was too overloaded, too poetically and everything was described too precisely. Particularly the beginning was a horror for me, when the whole family relationship by Frodo and Bilbo were explained. Does somebody like this our find this interesting?

I like it when something is happening, but here the real action has only begun after the first third of the book! Also everything wasn’t easy to understand and in my opinion at the beginning it was also difficult to come into the story, mostly because of the Old-English from Tolkien, which he has exaggerated too much and which I’ve not liked at all. Later when the story did go on, it become better, but the dialogues remained very ancient and conceited, so that I had to force myself to read on.

Nevertheless, now I can’t rate the book only negatively, because I love the main story and the characters in it so much …though, if I’m honest, mainly from the movies. But here I couldn’t really build up a good connection and it wasn’t a joyful reading. But as said, this is certainly because I already know the movies in and by heart. Hence, I would recommend this book for everybody who likes fantasy, but maybe for those who haven’t already seen the movies or not too often. 🙂

The plot and the action in the story gets better and more interesting after the point, where the hobbits leave the woods in which Tom Bombadil lives in. I know, some of you love Tom Bombadil but I thought he was only annoying with all his singing and prancing and therefore I’m glad he wasn’t also in the movie. Sorry- but that’s my opinion on that subject.
However, it become really exciting when they decide to destroy the ring, to bring him to Mordor and when they form the fellowship of the ring, to make their dangerous and almost impossible way there. My favorite characters are Sam (Sam is the real hero in my eyes!! Gandalf, Strider/ Aragon and of course Pippin *lol*)

I’m happy to be able to finish this book after nearly 3 months I certainly won’t read the other 2 books. There I‘m completely content with the movies. 😉

Ich weiß nicht, wo ich anfangen soll und für mich ist es wirklich schwer eine passende Bewertung zu schreiben. Ich liebe die Filme und habe sie schon unzählige Male und so oft gesehen, dass ich schon die Dialoge mitsprechen kann. Daher kann wohl jeder verstehen, dass das Buch nicht mehr wirklich viel Reiz oder Spannung für mich geboten hat und es ein mühsames Lesen war. Ich habe das Buch bereits vor Jahren auf Englisch gekauft und seitdem zweimal versucht es zu lesen und jedesmal wieder abgebrochen.

Auch dieses Mal habe ich sehr mit mir gehadert, aber alle haben auf mich eingeredet und mir gesagt, ich muss bis zu einem bestimmten Punkt kommen, und dann wird es besser. Aber für mich ist dieser Punkt leider nie richtig gekommen, dass ich sagen würde, ich muss jetzt unbedingt weiter lesen weil es mich interessiert, sondern es war immer ein Zwang dabei, endlich das Buch zu beenden, das ich bereits Ende Dezember angefangen habe –> das sagt wohl alles. 😦

Die Schreibweise von Tolkien war eindeutig nicht das was ich mag. Es war mir viel zu überladen, zu poetisch und alles zu genau beschrieben. Besonders der Anfang war Horror für mich, als die gesamten Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse von Frodo und Bilbo erklärt wurden. Wen interessiert das?
Ich möchte, dass etwas passiert, aber die richtige Handlung hat dann erst nach dem ersten Drittel des Buches begonnen. Auch war nicht alles leicht zu verstehen und meiner Meinung nach auch am Anfang schwierig hinein zu kommen, durch das Altenglisch von Tolkien, das er sehr ausgereizt hat und mir leider überhaupt nicht gefallen hat. Es wurde in der Handlung später besser, aber die Dialoge blieben übertrieben altertümlich und hochgestochen, dass ich mich zwingen musste weiter zu lesen.

Trotzdem kann ich das Buch jetzt nicht nur negativ bewerten, weil ich die eigentliche Geschichte und die Charaktere liebe… aber, wenn ich ehrlich bin, hauptsächlich aus dem Film. Hier konnte ich wenig Verbindung aufbauen und es war kein Kitzel oder Freude beim Lesen dabei. Aber wie gesagt, das liegt sicher daran, dass ich die Filme in und auswendig kenne. Daher würde ich dieses Buch für jeden empfehlen, der Fantasy mag, aber die Filme noch nicht, oder noch nicht soo oft gesehen hat. 🙂

Die Handlung und der Verlauf der Geschichte wird, ab dem Punkt, nachdem sie den Wald verlassen in dem Tom Bombadil lebt, besser und auch interessanter. Wirklich spannend wird es aber erst, wenn sie beschließen den Ring zu zerstören und eine Gruppe bilden, um gemeinsam den gefährlichen und fast unmöglichen Weg dorthin zu bestreiten. Meine Lieblingscharaktere sind Sam, Gandalf, Strider oder auch bekannt als Aragon.

Ich bin froh nach fast 3 Monaten dieses Buch beenden zu können und werde sicher nicht die weiteren 2 Teile auch noch lesen. Da gebe ich mich voll und ganz mit den Filmen zufrieden. 😉
