‚Lover Revealed‚
by J. R. Ward
Black Dagger Brotherhood # 4
First Sentence:
“ ‚What if I told you I had a fantasy?‘, Butch O’Neal put his Scotch down and eyed the blonde who’d spoken to him.“
Last Sentence:
“ Family, after all, was the staff of life. The very staff of life.“
Synopsis:
In the shadows of the night in Caldwell,New York , there’s a war raging between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other—six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. But now an ally of the Brotherhood is about to encounter his own dark desires…
Butch O’Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex-homicide cop, he’s the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world—to engage in the turf war with the lessers. He’s got nothing to lose. His heart belongs to a female vampire, an aristocratic beauty who’s way out of his league. If he can’t have Marissa, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers…
Fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he’s found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back. But even her love may not be enough to save him…
My thoughts about the book:
Like in the other books before I was again totally blown away and stirred by the great writing style and phrases of Ward and I wasn’t disappointed in the least and I’m still a huge fan of her work. Ward has a great ability to present a story easy and slightly, but manage at the same time to build up a huge suspense from the first pages on, which bond the reader totally to the book and where the reader is unable to stop reading. Like this book has done again with me and I almost read throuhg the book in one day and was totally addicted (like I’m to the whole series). And to be honest I’ve also to say that this series show me again how greatly my blog name ‘Bookaholic’ suits me because when I start a good book, like this one, I just can’t drop it or do anything else because there is nothing more important than the story. So I’m an addict but hopefully in something which is healthier than other addictions. 🙂
But now back to the book:
This time the book told, beside the main story about the war between the vampire brothers and the lesser, about the love story of Marissa and Butch. Marissa was born in the world of the high aristocrats of the vampire society with all their privilege, but also with their responsibilities, which restrain Marissa in her life and in her personality and don’t let her breath freely. Especially after she and Wrath, the king of all the vampires, break up their ‘relationship’ because he fall in love with the half human Beth, her repute decreased further and she is threaten by them like a leper. But the situation get’s even more complicated when Marissa cares for Butch in the hospital, after he was kidnapped by the lesser and almost beaten and tortured to death. But this time not only the vampire society turn away from her, but also her own brother because of the shame she brought to their family because of her feelings for Butch, who’s just a human. In this time, after she left her home, it’s clearly to see how Marissa changes from the shy wallflower to an independent, strong personality, who doesn’t let herself be push around anymore and who tries to find her own way, even if it gets hard. I liked the descriptions and the feelings which Ward has written in this relation, because for me they felt authentic and easy to understand, therefore I also felt caged and hopeless myself at the beginning, and then this feelings changed in a good way and all along I sympathized with Marissa.
Though Marissa was okay she isn’t one of my favorite characters in this series because at the beginning she acted like a little child and was totally prude. But then this all changed during only a few days because she was being together with Butch and this was just unrealistic, because before him she already lived some centuries and couldn’t force herself to become more characteristic and independent, which she made perfectly in just a few days. That was nice to read because it was important for their relationship but it was also a little misogynistic because she needed a man to change her life and her personality, like an addict or something. 🙂
About Butch I can’t say much because for me he was and will be always just a supporting character, not because I don’t like him but because he just suits the supporting role which springs some spirit and fun in the main story. But to get Butch presented as the main character of the whole story wasn’t very thrilling and I had to get used to it and I also didn’t feel the same enthusiasm like with the other vampires in this series.
But what I really liked in this part was that, besides of the main love story, we got some insights of the character Vishous. After Wrath, Rhage, Zsadist and partly also Phury had the chance to tell their history, he was one of the vampires I know the least about but I liked him nonetheless and I think he’s an interesting and likeable character. And in this book we got to know a little about him and his personality. Though Vishous is in some parts a little freaky and has different tastes in some ‘things’, I still like him and he fascinates me and therefore I’m really exciting and looking forward to the fifth book in which his whole story will be told.
Cover:
At this book I also like the American Cover because of the picture, though I prefer the German one of the first part because of the nice color (I love pink) and the pic on it.
All in all:
This is again a great book, with emotions and thrilling parts and suspense, which will provide a nice reading.
Rating:
3,5 of 5 points (I really liked it)
Quotes:
Vishous: “I liked you, cop. From the moment I met you. No… not the first moment. I wanted to kill you when I first met you. But then I liked you. A lot.”
Marissa: “All right, then, her first rule for the rest of her days: no more looking outside for definitions. She might not have any clue who she was, but better to be lost and searching than shoved into a social box by someone else.”
Butch: “Darkness will never take me… because I have you. Light of my life, Marissa. That’s what you are.“
